Changing Lights

Shot: Collins Ryàn - L'artiste

Wonderful to look into the distance. Beautiful sky. As a photographer, what I always try to clearly show in my own work is what can be seen in the dark parts.

Hence, basically I am removing the shadows. I have decided to lighten up certain objects like the trees on the right hand side. This, to me, gives them more structure and lets them play a bigger part in the overall picture. I have not ripped off the house located in the distance too much to not let all the attention go there.

When I saw this street photography photo of Ryàn's, I was first challenged and thought "What should I make of this now".

But because I like to play with light, I actually let the man be the center of the photo even more, not only by composition but also by giving the environment less light.

That way you forget what else is in the picture and you really wonder and ask yourself what this man is reading.

Stress

The man seems to be distracted by the woman who walks by. You see the tension in the eyes.

In order not to distract the beholders too much by everything that is happening around us here in this street photography shot, I put the violinist in full light and make the area a bit dark.

Lighten Up!

Shot: Collins Ryàn - L'artiste

Wim writes:

Ryàn likes to separate light and shadows in his photos, I have noticed by now.

But I worked the photo just and edited it like I usually do. I wanted to see what's in the distance. Therefore, I was removing shadows and making the black rounded frame really black!

Edited this photo as is my own workflow. At some points added some light accent, and really wanted to let the photo speak for itself.

I know that Ryàn takes a lot of black and white photos, or accentuating in his artworks in somewhat harder lights and shadows. When I saw this photo I thought that Ryàn intended to make it completely black and white.

I, on the other hand, just went the other way. I decided to add more color in the face. Now, that photo shines, exactly as I got to know Ryàn in recent years.
